About the Project

NEWS UPDATE: The Hearts of Steel DVD featuring a musical CD and 30 minute film, is now available to buy online here: http://www.sheffield-made.com/acatalog/Hearts_of_Steel.html

It is also on sale for £10 at Rotherham Arts Centre, Rotherham Information Centre, Magna Science Park and Clifton Park Museum shop.

The Hearts of Steel DVD follows on from the ‘Songs of Steel’ oral history project, in which many ex-steel workers and their families recorded their memories of the Rotherham steel industry.

Songs of Steel Community Oral History Project

The ‘Songs of Steel’ community project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund was initiated by Rotherham Community Arts and Archives and Local Studies in 2009. The project's aim was to collect the memories and stories of people in Rotherham who worked within the steel industry and to celebrate Rotherham’s industrial heritage and create a legacy for future generations.

The project strands:

  • Creating an oral history archive with 30 interviews with ex steel workers
  • Creating a musical CD featuring songs and poems by local musicians and writers about the steel industry
  • A final exhibition in June 2010 including an oral history listening post to be held at Magna Science Park and then to travel around local libraries and museums.
