About the Project

Songs of Steel Community Oral History Project

The ‘Songs of Steel’ community project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund was initiated by Rotherham Community Arts and Archives and Local Studies in 2009. The project's aim was to collect the memories and stories of people in Rotherham who worked within the steel industry and to celebrate Rotherham’s industrial heritage and create a legacy for future generations.

The exhibition opens Tuesday 15 June 2010 at Magna until Friday 5 July

Tuesday 13 July - Monday 2 August Mowbray Gardens Library

Monday 8 August - Friday 27 August Rotherham Central Library

Tuesday 31 August - Tuesday 28 September Rawmarsh Community Library

Tuesday 28 September - Tuesday 26 October Maltby Community Library

Tuesday 26 October - Tuesday 30 November Swinton Community Library

Look out for further dates and venues...

The project has three strands:

  • Creating an oral history archive with 30 interviews with ex steel workers
  • Creating a musical CD featuring songs and poems by local musicians and writers about the steel industry
  • A final exhibition in June 2010 including an oral history listening post to be held at Magna Science Park and then to travel around local libraries and museums.
